my new table

#1  Postby Col_Stone » Tue Apr 22, 2008 6:17 pm

Here's a little story about my new table :)
I was starting to get tired of my 4*10 table, it's ok on the 10ft side but 4 feet across made for pretty boring games if you like to have lots of big stuffand artillery on the table so i started building a new one,
I wanted a 6*,8 trouble was that i dont really have the room for a permanent table that big, so i had to make a folding table,
Here's a WIP as you can see it'll be a 4*8 table with an optional extra 2ft depth :)
Image
on the right you can see a old bed with new extra long legs, it'll hold the 4*8section, i'm putting a couple of folding legs on the 2*8
and in the backgound are bit's of my old table, which is going to be transformed into hills and mountainsides

I'm a little undecided on how to make the "ground" i'm leaning towards a dark desertterrain, that would be good for Gorkamorka, afghanistan, old west, and lots more :)
then i could just add mats/patches of "fur grass" when i need to game vietnam etc,,
i've never really liked the regular flat green tabletops either..

More to come

The worst part of the build,
Folding legs, they were shorter than the legs on my "bed" out came the jigsaw...

a good lesson i learned was to make sure iyou have all the stuff you need before you start anything ,, i was all out of sand and didn't notice until i had started mixing paints, had to use some brown scatter in the paint for texture
looks kind of good imho, so i'm not sure if i'm gonna do anything more on that front.. i considering adding patches of grass tho, it looks a little too barren to turn into any kind of jungletable now..

Holy hell Col, that is one huge freakin table. Nice work on it. I just have your basic 4x8 currently so that looks badass to play on.

I'm quite happy with it actually, however a 4*8 is perfectly good if you're not into airunits and such things :)

5*10 is probably the ultimate tho :)

That's really nice. I've just got a couple of sheets of MDF to put on my dining table to make it up to 6' x 4', tend to play down at my local club rather than at home any more so I haven't bothered with making anything more permanent. I might see about putting a folding table up in the garage now the roof is fixed and I've got a dedicated little outbuilding (old coal shed/outside loo) for my tools.

On the subject of building furniture, here's something I built a few weeks ago

I don't have a club to go to, most of the gaming here takes place in my apartment.. :)

That's a nice desk btw

I dedicatedly play down at IOG (the local gamestore) because thats where all the people are! Sure, i have friends that play 40k, but they would also prefer to play at outpost, or at thier own homes.

That is an awesome table tho. :P

Id love to make a table to, because building is the best part of the hobby, IMO, but its pointless to spend the money for me, because nobody would play on it!

Ta. It was an experiment designing and building a desk for the kids, I'm pretty happy with the result though even though I think carpenters would be screaming ... :P

Rayne, i see what you mean, building the thing was a blast, but expensive =)
